ArtyBird Courses
The question of whether or not distance learning is for you can sometimes by a tricky one! Sometimes simple geography can be the answer, after all its a long trek to Carnforth, especially for our students in Canada and China!

Sometimes it is more personal than that, we've asked some of our students to write a short piece about their experience to see if we can answer some of these questions.
"Distance learning for a practical subject?

I didn't give a thought as to how distance learning would work for such a practical subject when I enrolled with ArtyBird. I must have just assumed it would - and it has! I've now completed the C&G Foundation course and am doing the Intermediate, and I am really enoying the experience.

The learning material and support provided is excellent - step-by-step instructions when tackling something for the first time and regular aide-memoire sheets when revisiting a technique. Kate's at the end of the phone too, and I've found it very useful to be able to talk to her about how things are going (particularly when I feel they're not going so well) and to benefit from her advice and many years of experience. I've found Kate's approach to be objective, constructive and motivating (and the latter to be particularly important when working alone).

Fitting in distance learning can be difficult and I've really appreciated that Artybird are understanding and have let me have the time to complete assignments. No rigid deadlines.

I've got to mention too that I've loved the exposure to things other than feltmaking - drawing, painting, collage, the work of great artists and sculptors. I've tackled things that I never thought I could tackle - the outcomes have been variable, but my knowledge has expanded and, as a result, my work continues to develop and I've grown as a feltmaker."

"Having been taught the basics of felting by a friend I became hooked and I wanted to develop my skills. I am English speaking but I currently live outside the UK, so attended options are limited. I found ArtyBird Carnforth's online foundation course and decided to give it a try. I loved it. Not only did it teach me felting techniques, but I was challenged to draw, to paint, to dye and to stitch. At all times although challenged I was supported and received constructive feedback on my work.

Comprehensive modules, with backup information are delivered via the Internet on a timescale chosen by yourself. Questions are answered promptly. The practical work is assessed by simply sending pieces in and the written supporting evidence via both Internet and mail submissions.

I so enjoyed the foundation course, I started the intermediate course. What I like the most about these courses is the complete flexibility and the combination of felting skill and design capability development. I think it it quite easy to learn to make a thing, but this course goes far beyond that, developing you as a feltmaker who can develop their own ideas and make a wide range of saleable prices of felt work. I would recommend ArtyBird felt courses to anyone who has an interest in exploring and developing the design and techniques of feltmaking."
